What is acupuncture?
Health is considered a free flow of Qui (energy). When there are blocks or stagnation, there exists disharmony or dis-ease. Acupuncture is a means by which the normal flow of Qui (energy) is restored in the body and mind.
Does acupuncture work?
There is much evidence to prove that acupuncture DOES WORK for many conditions. The National Institute of Health (www.nih.com) cites remarkable evidence or the 2000+ years that it has been in practice is proof enough. Please refer to the “Services” page for a list.
Is acupuncture safe?
Absolutely. I use only disposable, sterile, FDA approved acupuncture needles.
Is acupuncture painful?
No. Some people may feel a small pinch while others feel nothing at all. Some commonly reported sensations include a feeling of heaviness, or mild ache around the needle or sensation traveling up or down the affected meridian. Acupuncture needles are made as thinly as possible and when inserted by a licensed and skilled acupuncturist, they do not hurt.
How many treatments will I need?
The number of treatments will depend on the nature, severity and duration of the problem. Many patients show improvement in 2-10 treatments. Chronic conditions are helped with additional time and extended treatments. The speed of healing with long held chronic issues is further assisted by the patient's motivation to live and eat well.
How many times a week would I need to be treated?
People receive acupuncture 1-3 times per week depending on severity of symptom.
What should I expect from my first Symptom Specific Appointment?
Your first appointment for a Symptom Specific Treatment (SST) will be an hour and half. Prior to your appointment you will either be emailed or you can download a health history form on the “links” page. Please fill out the health history form and bring it to your first appointment. At the initial treatment, we will begin by having a conversation about your health concerns and health history. I will ask a series of detailed questions to gain an understanding of your general constitution, body function, and current symptoms. Once I have a clear understanding of your overall health picture, I will be able to craft a treatment plan to fit your specific needs and we will begin to implement it right away. After the health intake you will receive an acupuncture treatment. Needles are inserted and retained for between 20 and 40 minutes, depending on what the treatment plan prescribes.
Subsequent appointments will be 1 hour unless you sign up for additional services (i.e. cupping, tui na). You will be asked to notice any changes between treatments, even changes that are not directly related to your main complaint. Acupuncture treats the whole body and one imbalance affects the whole system.
What should I expect from my 30 minute “Stress Relief” treatment?
This treatment is more general in nature and is designed for a “relax and refresh” experience during your work day. This is a fully clothed treatment. As stated by www.ehealthmd.com, “It has been estimated that two-thirds of all visits to physicians are for stress-related problems. Recent evidence indicates that the physical changes associated with stress may contribute to the leading causes of death - heart disease and cancer.” As it is vital to reduce and manage stress for healthier productive lives, efficient work practice, and overall well-being, this treatment addresses stress management specifically.
The effects of stress include the following: |
