Infertility
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has been used to treat infertility for thousands of years. By using a combination of acupuncture and Chinese herbs it is possible to stimulate ovulation, help to regulate hormone production and communication, and increase blood flow to the uterus (creating a thicker uterine lining and increasing the likelihood of implantation of the embryo in the uterus). It has also been reported that Chinese herbal medicine in conjunction with acupuncture may enhance the quality of the eggs that the ovaries produce. While acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine are effective in helping couples conceive naturally, they are also highly successful in supplementing ART (assisted reproductive therapy) including IVF and IUI. Growing numbers of research studies in medical journals are demonstrating impressive results when acupuncture is combined with ART. A landmark study published in April 2002 in The Fertility and Sterility Journal concluded that women who received acupuncture after IVF embryo transfer had a 42.5% success rate, compared with a 26.3% success rate of those women who did not receive acupuncture. TCM is not only useful in treating female infertility, but male infertility as well. Many problems concerning sperm motility, mobility, or morphology can be helped by acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine.
Pain
Acupuncture’s ability to control pain has been documented for thousands of years and has become well accepted in modern Western medicine. Increasingly, acupuncture is being used as the treatment of choice for pain management in the United States. Whereas prescription drugs only mask the pain, acupuncture works to find the root of the pain and ease suffering by correcting the body’s imbalances. Acupuncture is effective for many types of pain including: fibromyalgia, arthritis, chronic pain, sports injuries, sciatica, and headaches. A recent Duke University Medical Center study concluded that acupuncture before and during surgery significantly reduces the level of pain and amount of potent painkillers needed by patients after surgery. Acupuncture can be effective as the only treatment for pain, but it is also very compatible with other forms of health care. Chinese medicine greatly enhances the effect of other therapies and reduces unwanted side effects from various drugs. Positive results can be achieved relatively quickly with acupuncture which works in a safe way, encouraging the body to promote natural healing and functioning.
Detox
For more than a quarter century, acupuncture has been used in the United States to help people lose their cravings for alcohol, nicotine, and other addictive substances. There is excellent physiological and clinical evidence to support the use of auricular acupuncture (ear acupuncture) in lessening symptoms brought on by withdrawal, including: depression, anxiety, cravings, body aches, headaches, nausea, sweating, muscle cramps, and other physical withdrawal symptoms. It is possible to alleviate some withdrawal symptoms experienced by people giving up smoking, drugs, or alcohol by raising levels of endorphins in the nervous system. It is clear that endorphin levels throughout the nervous system can be increased by acupuncture. It must be stressed that acupuncture cannot replace willpower. It can only help with withdrawal symptoms experienced by those already motivated and committed to solving their particular problem.
